What do we do?

On a daily basis our Intelligence team maintains an overview of current events around the globe, ranging from weather events to geopolitical unrest and one off industrial incidents or terrorism.

We monitor events that we know our clients will want and need more insight into. However, we are flexible and if you and your team are concerned about a particular event that you do not see covered by the site, please reach out to us.

We use sources such as the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System, run by the UN, the EU Emergency Response System, and the EU Satellite Earth Observation platform, Copernicus.

We publish an event icon onto our Events' page to demonstrate that we are monitoring it and are preparing to take further action to report against it if necessary.

Intelligence Gathering

When it is clear that the event is of significance and that our clients would benefit from further analysis, we follow well practised internal protocols to gather intelligence from the ground, using an Intelligence Collection Plan.

We receive automatic feeds from many sources. Examples include:

  • The US Geological Survey Wildfire Application which produce fire perimeter maps

  • NASA's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) which allows us to interpret images even if they are cloud or smoke covered

  • The National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center

  • The Joint Typhoon Warning Center

  • The UK Department of Environmental Food and Rural Affairs Data Centre

  • The US Geological Survey Earthquake programme

We also use open source data from local news agencies, local weather stations, social media, CCTV and sensor networks to complete our Intelligence Gathering and produce reports and data.

Imagery

We work with the best and most agile and responsive constellations of satellites in the world to procure the imagery we use to make our assessments. Our satellite imagery is 50cm resolution or better and we supplement it with aerial imagery and imagery from Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones) where it is available and helps in our assessment.

Some events may be long lasting and may linger over the site of the event (Fire and Storm / Hurricane) in which case the imagery may be obscured by smoke / cloud for an indeterminate amount of time in which case we revisit our Intelligence Collection Plan to determine the best course of action.

We use different sensors that collect in different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, outside the area that is visible to the human eye. Shortwave infrared imagery can penetrate through smoke but is collected at a lower resolution. When combined with VIIRS data, this is a useful tool for plotting and monitoring wildfires. Radar imagery collects 24hrs and can penetrate cloud. We use specialist applications and algorithms to exploit radar imagery, especially for monitoring flooding.
