Location Search

How to drop a precise pin at any address to see exactly where it falls within an event footprint.

Location Search lets you drop a pin at any address on an event map — regardless of how that address is stored in your portfolio. This solves a common problem: when a portfolio location is geocoded to a zip code or postcode rather than a specific building, the pin appears in the middle of a wide area. Searching for the actual address places the pin precisely, so you can see exactly where that location falls within the event footprint.

How to use Location Search

The search bar is at the top of the event report page.

  1. Click the search bar at the top of the report.

  2. Type a street address, building name, or zip/postcode.

  3. Select the correct result from the dropdown.

  4. GEO drops a pin at that address on the map.

Why geocoding matters

Portfolio data can be geocoded to the centroid of a zip or postcode area rather than a specific building. When you view Location Insights, the point on the map reflects that centroid, which may be hundreds of metres from the actual property.

For example, a warehouse on the edge of a zip code might appear to be well inside a damaged location when the centroid is plotted — or outside when it isn't. Searching for the actual street address can show you the true position.

FAQ

Does Location Search change anything in my portfolio or Insights data?
No. The pin is for reference only — it doesn't update your portfolio geocoding or affect any Insights calculations. You're adding a visual marker to help you interpret the map.

Can I search for locations outside the event footprint?
Yes. You can search any address, anywhere in the world. The pin will appear wherever the address is located, even if it's outside the event area.

The address I searched for placed the pin in the wrong location. What should I do?
Try a more specific search — include the city or state to disambiguate. If the geocoder still places the pin incorrectly, you can use the Uploading Your Own Data feature to manually plot a coordinate for that location.

Does the pin stay on the map if I change layers or use a Quickview?
Yes. The pin persists while you navigate the report. It clears if you reload the page or open a different report.
